Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.
Readings
You can follow my daily readings as they happen here. Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week. They’re posted to the blog daily under the title OTR Links.
Sunday
- In case you ever need to know how many cores are in your Windows computer, here is how to find out
- It’s so sad to read of the lifeguard shortage all across Canada – it was a great summer job for me. Folks, you can’t become a good swimmer in a 24 foot round backyard pool
Monday
- A family in Sarnia have taken in a family from Ukraine and are fearing them up for Canada Day
- Microsoft is warning us that Russia may be attacking countries that are supporting Ukraine – that’s a big list
Tuesday
- This is a nice introduction to what you’ll need to take digital notes
- Parts of David Garlick’s book are now available for download as a podcast
Wednesday
- A story about my old high school and a successful virtual reality program. Why didn’t they have this when I was there. Heck, why didn’t they have computers?
- This was so sad to read – it’s a state by state summary of how much money you need to be happy. Convert it to Canadian dollars and get really depressed
Thursday
- ChromeOS got an upgrade to 103 in the Stable Channel and here are some thoughts about the features and why you’re going to like it
- Who doesn’t like a good story and picture of clouds?
Friday
- Negotiations are off and running, at least unofficially, and those darned teachers better be in classrooms and coaching in September
- You don’t read the panic about viruses anymore but they’re still out there and Windows computers are in the crosshairs. Do you need protection?
Saturday
- I had never heard of Spiral Linux but after reading this article, I’m getting the urge to try it out
- This is a nice summary of things that you can do with Google Docs. (the reference to Writely brought a tear to my eye…) Lots of reminders if you’re a regular user but there’s some new ideas as well

Technology Troubleshooting
Sometimes, there are just those little gotchas that drive you crazy.
The watch face that I’ve used for years on my Samsung watch keeps crashing. I know because I’ll look down and see it displaying the default theme.
I may be a slow learner but I finally decided to act on it. I deleted the theme and went with another one. What drives me crazy is that the new one has more features and I would have thought that it would be a bad actor.
Fingers crossed, but it’s working really well.
Look what I made
With all the Wordle craze, I of course blogged about it earlier but also created a Wakelet of all the Wordle clones I could find. Once created, I’ve been adding to it daily, it seems. I guess it’s presumptuous to think I could do it all in one session. It certainly has taken the online world by storm.
My collection is available here: https://wke.lt/w/s/BuvP40
Update – July 2: Up to 68 entries.
Video of the Week
Being young isn’t what it cracked up to be.
Photo of the Week
Jaimie and I went and did the Greenway for our morning walk yesterday and I caught this neat picture of the track ahead and the sun peeking through the trees. What I failed to capture were the flies! They were everywhere.
Thanks for reading.
Please join me daily for something new and, hopefully, interesting for you. I honestly and truthfully appreciate your few moments reading my thoughts. Time willing, this summary appears every Sunday afternoon.
Be safe.
