doug — off the record

just a place to share some thoughts

My Week Ending 2020-10-25

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

Readings

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week.

Sunday

  • There was a lot of complaining recently about Microsoft adding shortcuts to PWAs in an update. I didn’t notice them here but I don’t see it as a big deal If it bothers you, just delete them.
  • You know, I’ll bet they’re all from Trump supporters. We flipped between Trump and Biden townhalls and thought that Savannah Guthrie stole the night.

Monday

  • I found this to be an interesting report on a comparison of web browsers. I live for stuff like this.
  • That Trump and Trudeau differ on their opinion of keeping our border closed is of no surprise to me.

Tuesday

  • There are some interestingly new horror movies in this collection. Can I find them to enjoy before Hallowe’en?
  • You knew that it had to come to something like this. When people coming to Canada are quarantined for 14 days, the NHL won’t be crossing borders soon.

Wednesday

  • I’ve always wondered about that too. Especially when the potential president could have problems in office because of age, who is your Number 2?
  • The big takeaway from the shuffle of students from home to school or school to home is a strong message that we have no perfect plan in education.

Thursday

  • Yes, we Canadians are paying attention to what’s happening south of the border. Here’s why.
  • The fact that teachers and students are having difficulties with the technologies for online education is another indicator that there really isn’t a plan.

Friday

  • If you’re a user of Wakelet, you may find this list of tips and tricks helpful.
  • Every day, there seems to be something new and bizarre surrounding the US President.

Saturday

  • This echoes my thoughts about online conferences. I hope that subject organizations are going that extra mile to make their own offerings attractive.
  • One of the fallouts of using tap with my credit card is that I seldom see or use cash anymore. I wonder how long before I see the new $1 coin?

Technology Troubleshooting

I wasn’t disappointed.

As I indicated last week, I was looking forward to an upgrade to my Jabra earbuds and it came on Wednesday or Thursday. The passive noise cancellation now has a friend – active noise cancellation.

It’s a mixed blessing though. It’s so good that I can’t chew gum and walk at the same time. I keep hearing the inner me chomping.

More importantly when you’re walking a dog down a road, facing traffic, it blocks out any of the noise that might be created behind me as a car pulls out to pass.

Still, I’m enjoying being completely alone with my thoughts!

Video of the Week

In memory of Jerry Jeff Walker. Who doesn’t know this song?

Photo of the Week

At the main intersection in old Acton was this Hallowe’en display. I thought that the green really popped on the orange background. Disclaimer – not edited; just taken by my camera while out for a walk.

Thanks for reading.

Please join me daily for something new and, hopefully, interesting for you. I honestly and truthfully appreciate your few moments reading my thoughts. Time willing, this summary appears every Sunday afternoon.

Be safe.
