doug — off the record

just a place to share some thoughts

Not logging in

I don’t know where this started but I found it through MPP Roman Barber.

An initiative like this will only succeed if it’s adopted by a large part of the community. Sort of like being vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus. The hashtab #openOntarioschools is a thing and does have a few posts tagged with it as I write this post on Monday morning.

Those that are posting with that hashtag mostly seem to be frustrated parents and students. I understand their frustrations; we’re going through it as a family.

To be honest, it doesn’t matter whether school is online or not, the answer to the question:

“What did you learn in school today?”

is always

“Nothing”

So, it would come as no surprise that any initiative like this would make any difference in the perception of learning. Although, it might help a bit with social awareness. If nothing else, it should serve as a message to anyone listening that people are expecting movement instead of silence.

One big takeaway has to be that people are appreciating the whole school experience more than ever. What’s the expression “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”?

Personally, I’m not looking for the world to change on June 2. Even though the Premier presumably received all the input from stakeholders last Friday afternoon, any announcement about schools was not forthcoming over the weekend.

Yet, something is happening in the province:

550 vaccinated health-care workers to attend Maple Leafs-Canadiens Game 7 in Toronto

It’s supposed to be for fully vaccinated health-care workers and they truly are deserving of this recognition. You have to wonder how much they could scalp those tickets for. The success that Montreal had when they invited a limited audience to the game on Saturday was noticed.

What would it take to at least get a message out about education?
