doug — off the record

just a place to share some thoughts

Traditionally

No, I didn’t miss posting this by a day.

It was a rant that I was sitting on and thought that I’d share it on International Women’s Day.

I quickly rethought it and deliberately am posting it on the day afterwards.

I am proud of all the women in my life who have done amazing things. This isn’t about that.

It’s about so many of the stories that I read yesterday and kept running across this one word. It seems to me that, as long as we continue to use this word, that we’re not making progress.

The word is “traditionally”.

The context which I saw so many times about the accomplishment of women was:

“She did xxxxx in a traditionally man’s job”.

I have to ask – what value does that word add to the sentence. In fact, what’s the point of the sentence at all? Ask yourself – how many times have you read or heard that phrase? Doesn’t it grind your gears?

That word needs to be dropped if we truly believe what we say we do.

  1. I agree, Doug! In a school context, I wonder if the word “traditionally,” also needs to be reconsidered. Sometimes continuing with a tradition is good enough, but is that always the case? Do we sometimes need to reconsider what’s always been done. “Traditionally.” Maybe a word worth reconsidering and/or removing in many different contexts.

  2. Not sure if this would make a better point: “..in what used to be considered a man’s job… “. (Not traditional and a misguided thing of the past). But yah, better to be dropped altogether.
