There are times where I think that I’ve fallen asleep and woke myself a few years later.
I could swear that the whole concept of driverless cars was just filed in the “maybe some day” category.
I’ve wondered about things:
- what would happen if I owned one and it got in an accident? Does my insurance policy cover this?
- will I always have to be in the passenger’s seat paying as much attention as if I was driving?
- what would I ever do if someone was injured by my driverless car?
- does it swerve when it sees a pothole coming and then swerve back because it sees an oncoming car?
- how would it handle the mishmash of lines like on the 401 when the construction was ongoing in the Cambridge area?
- how does it handle other idiot drivers with less driving skills?
- does it know that the railway crossing ahead is a nightmare to be slowly crawled over?
- what happens when it suddenly snows like it does in Ontario spring?
- what happens when a detour is required and one of those orange directional signs blows over?
- can it be hacked?
- and your question here…
Google’s got us covered…
So, let’s say that we trust that Google has everything working properly. I still see me in the passenger seat with my braking foot firmly pressed to the floor.
Maybe I slept longer than I thought. Why not let people own driverless cars and see how it goes? Nah, let’s just go ahead and put the driverless concept into taxis!
Maybe pick a small little community?
Nah, let’s go for the gusto and go for Los Angeles? I can’t think of a more congested place I’ve ever visited.
Google’s Robotaxis Can Now Operate in Los Angeles. Here’s Why Some Angelenos Are Concerned.
Would you take a driverless taxi or would you pass and wait for a driver?
