I’m old enough to remember when a computer could be programmed to play against you in a game of checkers or Xs and Os. Don’t laugh; you’re probably that old too.

The Xs and Os game actually lent itself to a problem that I gave to some of my really sharp students to write their own version of it. Of course, they did write a pretty sharp solution to the game. At the time, we were also talking about making computers human-like and they went above and beyond the actual game and made the interaction humanlike. I’m pretty sure I kept a copy of their efforts and it’s around here somewhere.

We’ve seen huge growth in the development of programming to make computers user-friendly and interactive.

Who hasn’t heard of Dolly Parton? She’s an amazing individual on so many different levels and one of those levels is her singing.

She’s also famous for this quote.

“It takes a lot of time and money to look this cheap, honey,”

Back to the singing. One of my favourite songs of hers is Joeline.

Now we have the efforts of Holly Herndon to amaze us.

Ms. Herndon has incorporated artificial intelligence to have her computer sing Parton’s song.

Try playing and listening to each with your eyes closed. I’m sure that you’ll be amazed. Is that really all generated by AI without human voice?

The AI that is used is on the website Holly+ which allows you to poke around by yourself. Read the about link to be blown away.
