It doesn’t seem that long but it was a horrible time in Goderich and rural Huron County as a tornado hit the area. It was devastating. Stuff like that shouldn’t happen around here.

Powerful tornado kills man in Goderich, Ontario

My wife and I got away for the past weekend after being at home all summer attending to other things. Normally, a trip to Huron County would have us heading home to Clinton but we decided to do things a bit differently this year and stayed in Goderich and had a few great days and sunsets there. It was a bit strange being in a community where you don’t know anyone to meet up for supper or drinks or something. Maybe that’s the point though; just to spend some time together.

11 years ago in August was the big tornado event. It just ripped through the town as it headed inland and seemed to have the beautiful courthouse in the middle of the square set in its crosshairs. I had previously blogged about it here. I’m still taken by the difference between the nicely treed area and what was left after the storm. I can tell you that replanting has been successful and there are some trees nicely in place. We walked the square looking at Farmer and BIA markets on Saturday and Sunday.

Today, on Facebook, my memories brought back a collection of the pictures that I had taken 11 years ago.

I still shudder when I see the aftermath and think of what it might have been like to live through it.

Kudos to the Goderich and Benmiller communities for hanging tough and rebuilding.
