Sweet Lou! …

… officially recognized at last.

It takes a very special person to wear the Number 1 and do it justice. As of yesterday, officially, the Number 1 will never be worn again by a Detroit Tiger player. If you ever get a chance to visit Comerica Park, you’ll see the list of numbers that have been retired. They’re right up there on the brick wall. Plus Ty Cobb.

#2 Charlie Gehringer
#3 Alan Trammell
#5 Hank Greenberg
#6 Al Kaline
#11 Sparky Anderson
#16 Hal Newhouser
#23 Willie Horton
#47 Jack Morris
#42 Jackie Robinson

On Saturday, Lou Whitaker had his #1 retired by the Detroit Tigers. I can’t imagine the feelings that he had sitting to watch this tribute and be among the other Tigers who have had their numbers retired. He and Alan Trammel were just magic playing their positions at second base and shortstop. It would have been so appropriate had they had their numbers retired together. On the other hand, it’s wonderful to see him recognized by himself. Alan Trammel’s speech was so appropriate.

I’ve always been a Tigers fan but it became solidified when we moved just across the border and got to watch Tiger Baseball all the time. 1984 was indeed special.

The whole ceremony appears below.

He truly needs to be headed to Cooperstown.
