My Week Ending 2022-01-02

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week. They’re posted to the blog daily under the title OTR Links.

  • This is such an interesting way of looking at the world when you rearrange things according to population
  • It”s the end of the year and a time to look at the best and worst of things – this time, it’s about technology

  • Kudos to the Town of Tecumseh for doing what the Government of Ontario refuses to do at this time
  • Boxing Day has always been a day for fighting crowds looking for deals but these days, it ain’t the same – this time in London

  • It was sad to read about the passing of John Madden. He came across so well on television both as a coach and later as an analyst – Boom!
  • Who doesn’t like a good volcano – at a distance. Here are some from the past year

  • I like reading “Top whatever” lists because there’s always something I think should be in there but isn’t. Here’s Weird Facts about the world
  • If this story is true about an Alexa recommendation, it should make you stop and think about digital assistants and kids

  • Television networks and news sources like to have yearly summaries of things and one is the list of people that died in the year. This is one person’s list from this year
  • I didn’t see the office in this company logo until I read the article and had it explained to me. I’m getting old, I guess

  • It was sad that Betty White didn’t live to be 100 but she gave us great comedy over the years; for me the best was on the Mary Tyler Moore Show
  • I think that many Blackberry users will have moved on to something else but if they need a push, January 4th is the day they stop working

  • There weren’t any fireworks around here that I knew of to celebrate New Years’ Eve so I lived vicariously through Toronto’s
  • Who doesn’t like wandering around virtually looking at things in Google Streetview? Here’s one person’s thought about the best of Streetview

Technology Troubleshooting

In theory, it sounded like it should work. I have a Chromebook with a typical low end processor like many of the first do. It runs amazingly well. When you buy into the concept of Chrome OS and leave your work on the web, you really just need a computer running the browser.

I had finally decided to bit the bullet on a 2010 MacBook until a family memory said that they were interested in having their own computer. In a project that took way longer than I thought it would, I went through the process of creating a new account and then blowing away everything from my days using it. I had so much there.

It fired up (eventually – do you remember hard drives?) and as long as it’s plugged in, it works remarkably well. After all, it has an Intel i5 processor, 4GB of RAM and when you log in, it runs very nicely. It’s way better than the low-end Chromebooks the school board buys.

I’m looking forward to seeing how long it works out.

On social media, you see some great funny things. I think that I’ve seen so many that I just smile and move on. This one below from my friend Carl Frank in Arkansas made me truly laugh out loud. It was the funniest thing that I’ve see for quite some time, I think. Anyone who has ever taken Computer Science should at least smile.

Thanks for reading.

Please join me daily for something new and, hopefully, interesting for you. I honestly and truthfully appreciate your few moments reading my thoughts. Time willing, this summary appears every Sunday afternoon.

Be safe.
