My Week Ending 2021-06-13

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

Readings

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week.

Sunday

  • A nice collection of funny things attributed to Americans so I don’t know about the fact checking but still funny
  • The first female goaltender selected in the OHL is from Parkhill – I hope that she does incredibly well

Monday

  • Yeah, but wait until Windows 11 – one person’s love for Chromebooks instead of a Windows laptop
  • Ryerson’s status is torn down – what will happen to the universities name?

Tuesday

  • You can’t blame kids – so many things are off the books now and this must look so appealing
  • This may be the best thing that you read if you’re going to be implementing “coding” with your students

Wednesday

  • A huge upgrade to the Vivaldi browser may make many want to check it out now and see if it can replace what you’re currently using
  • The Toronto District School Board has a new director of education – is there a tougher job in the province – I wish her well

Thursday

  • This is a kind of neat representation of the internet as countries
  • Some information about the new mathematics to be taught in Grade 9 – maybe they can pay off their debt before Grade 10?

Friday

  • Ontario hotspots can start getting their second shots of COVID vaccine on Monday – the moving target moves again
  • In case you slept through the eclipse, here’s a report complete with pictures. It was foggy here…

Saturday

  • It may be that many people don’t care but I, personally, am happy to see the full URL return to Google Chrome
  • It might cost you a bit more to get your eyes checked in Ontario in September

Technology Troubleshooting

I was really frustrated writing this post. I was using the Vivaldi browser and, as you might guess, there’s a lot of scrolling doing up and down the page as I write it chronologically.

Every now and again while scrolling, the text would shrink and I’d had to whack CTRL-0 to get it back to regular size. It was frustrating to the point where I was going to switch browsers.

The last time it happened, I stopped and paid attention. I think we all know that we get into a routine doing this and such is the life here. However, I took a moment and located the cursor. It was right over top of the text resizer in the bottom right corner. Vivaldi is the only browser that I have that has a bottom status bar and so it wouldn’t happen anywhere else.

Just a reminder to me that most computer screwups are self-inflicted. I whispered an apology to my browser.

A final goodbye to my Bose earphones. My daughter borrowed them and they didn’t survive the laundry.

Thanks for reading.

Please join me daily for something new and, hopefully, interesting for you. I honestly and truthfully appreciate your few moments reading my thoughts. Time willing, this summary appears every Sunday afternoon.

Be safe.

The content of this blog is created by me at the keyboard or as a result of an aggregator of my daily reading under the title OTR Links. On Fridays, look for my signature post "This Week in Ontario Edublogs" where I try to share some great writing from Ontario Educators. The other regular post appears Sunday mornings as I try to start a conversation about things that have gone missing from our daily lives.
