Even more uncertainty

It was all the news early this morning and, as you might expect, sparked all kinds of discussion in the media. We’re talking about the rumblings that March Break might not happen in its traditional form.

The traditional media is reporting.

Report: March Break to be delayed, not cancelled

‘Double-edge sword’ of cancelling March Break, parents and students worry while Ministry considers the idea

And in community generated media on Twitter

As I’m sure that you can imagine, there are passionate messages from both sides of the discussion.

There were also some disgusting comments about teachers and students being “off” for the past few weeks. Anyone who has been paying attention know that these times have been anything but “off”. A new reality of teaching and learning has been substituted for education as usual. It’s been taking its toll on all education workers, parents, and students.

What do we know? We know of uncertainty.

  • Schools have been locked and the move to learning online done because we’re concerned that the virus might spread.
  • Schools have not been opened (or will soon be) because they’re the safest place for students. “No expense has been spared.”

It seems to me that you can’t have it both ways.

  • For some, March Break has been a traditional time to hop on a plane and head to Florida or somewhere else that’s warm.
  • For some, March Break has been a traditional time to head north and take in some skiing.
  • For some, March Break has been a traditional time for mid-winter hockey tournaments
  • For some, March Break has been a time to just hunker down and recharge.

The current laws of the land prohibit the first three sorts of activities.

There’s just so much uncertainty yet again over this issue. I guess we’ll have to wait until later this week to find out. In the meantime, numbers seem to be dropping and the scheduled March Break is still five weeks away.

I’d be most interested to read your thoughts about where we should head as a province. Obviously, we want the best and safest solution – virus wise, and mental health wise.

What’s the solution?
