My Week Ending 2020-09-06

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

Readings

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week.

  • It may well be too late for most people with school districts appointing which LMS their teachers are to use but if you have a chance, ask these questions.
  • I have mixed feelings about giving teachers hazard pay. One the one hand, it recognizes what they’re going in to but if the worst happens does it stop them from legal action?
  • This is the sort of thing that you see featured on the Mayday show, not a Toronto highway.
  • I suspect that, if you ask 100 teachers, you’ll get 100 different opinions about what essential school supplies would be.
  • What did he have to do to get the attention of the American media? Hit a hole in one? Be an American?
  • Those of us who read 1984 knew that it was coming. Although, we might have guessed a little earlier than 2020.
  • I agree with this. Ventilation is incredibly important. I think the bigger question should be why did it take a pandemic to make it happen.
  • Why does the whole world need to be aware of copyright issues when the US President’s team doesn’t? Even when told so.
  • There really has been a great deal written about the Microsoft Flight Simulator recently. I haven’t played around with for years. Is it time to resume?
  • Do you think that Apple will sue Microsoft over its use of macOS wallpaper things in the new Flight Simulator?
  • Windows definitely changed the way that I work with PCs. And Macs, and Linux, everything.
  • I wonder if this would apply to me? I try to get out and expand my browsing horizons regularly..
  • Spotting a bot is something that’s really important for today’s web reader. Here are some tips.
  • In theory, this is what should happen if and when COVID-19 pops up in Ontario schools.

Technology Troubleshooting

I could write this up to two different things.

I have a new internet provider.

I had an update to my Chromebook.

I noticed recently in a chat with someone where each message was timestamped that my messages didn’t show the correct time but a time three hours older than it should. Weird.

So, I went in and checked and the option to use time from the internet was checked. I’d been using that for years but now it was wrong. I toggled to another option which was to set it manually and it was good. When I toggled back, it was three hours off.

Not insurmountable but just enough to get under my skin!

Video of the Week

A tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Lost too early.

Does that owl look cross-eyed to you?

Thanks for reading.

Please join me daily for something new and, hopefully, interesting for you. I honestly and truthfully appreciate your few moments reading my thoughts. Time willing, this summary appears every Sunday afternoon.

Be safe.
