Learning this week

I feel badly when I get caught up in something that I was intending to do and forgot. That happened to me recently and a reminder from the Centre for Education in Mathematics in Computing (CEMC) over the weekend reminded me that I had dropped the ball.

The CEMC has remained true to its vision of supporting mathematics, computer science, and technology teachers with summer professional learning. It’s a wonderful opportunity normally with a stay in a student residence and learning face to face with other teachers. Of course, this year, things are different.

The learning has gone virtual.

The conference starts today and runs for the next three days. The sessions offered are bang on with their mission. There are quality sessions in the strands.

Tentative schedule is available here.

There’s a real sense of understanding what’s happening in Ontario with how the conference is approached. Like many of the events that I attended this summer, registration is free. It seems almost criminal to charge money given everything that teachers are going through. After all, you have to provide your own eats if you attend! The sessions seem to be well filtered and the content seems to be just what an educator of Mathematics and Computer Science/Technology needs during these times.

The planning also takes into consideration the time for educators. There are two time slots each day – 3:30 and 7:30 with the sessions recorded for later viewing. I don’t know about you but I don’t have the desire to sit in front of a screen for an extended period of time. This planning suits me well.

Registration is here.

I’m thankful for the reminder and plan to jump into a few of the sessions.

  1. Apologies. My fat thumb accidentally hit the “thumbs down” rating.

I have been involved with CEMC Summer Institute for CS Educators for over 10 years. Now that I’m retired I’m no longer making presentations but working to support CEMC. I’m moderating the 6 online CS sessions.

Thank you Doug for bringing attention to these sessions. It’s not too late to register. Registration is open until the event is concluded.
