My Week Ending 2020-04-12

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

Readings

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week.

  • I hope that it doesn’t come to this for everyone but here are instructions for how to create your own facemask at home.
  • I know that he was playing by the rules with his final Jeopardy bet but there should have been more than just social media embarrassment as punishment for missing the answer by this much.
  • Indeed, the online scum have crawled out from under their rocks at this time promptly inspiring this warning for parents from the RCMP.
  • Hats off to the UAW and Ford Motor Company for making Personal Protection Equipment so quickly.
  • It’s not a good news time for Zoom with its issues making the news everywhere including New York City schools where it is now banned.
  • A Google Doodle where they celebrate the efforts of doctors, nurses, and all medical workers.
  • This is a spectacular “Digital Experience Calendar” with entries being events and times. Every teacher should bookmark it.
  • Stop motion animation is a great deal of fun and you can do so much with the resulting video. Here’s an example of our Prime Minister’s speech coming from Winnipeg.
  • Another Canadian company retools to start producing N95 respirators.
  • Maybe this isn’t necessarily the best of humour for everyone but if you’re a Mathematics nerd, you’ll love it.
  • Good news for kids. In Ontario, the Easter Bunny has been declared an essential service. Not only that, it will be allowed access to your house.
  • I’m sure that the fact that Google offers location data, even if it is for a good cause, will cause some concern from our privacy overlords.
  • Thanks to the release of this recipe, you no longer have to sit at home and lament not being able to get a McDonald’s Big Mac. I’d also like the recipe to Popeye’s chicken for the BBQ too, please.
  • I have no problem with the RCMP checking up on people who have been ordered to be quarantined. At the same time, I hope they don’t catch anyone. I’d like to believe that people know how important this is and are doing it.
  • I’ve never been to the Bay of Fundy but I imagine that it kind of looks like this.
  • Childish is about the only word that I can use on this blog to describe this action that was allegedly taken. I’d still like to make this blog friendly for all.
  • EdTech has really been caught with its pants down during the current lockdown, schools closed situation. There are so many things that could have happen if there were leaders and consultants who understood technology, the issues, equity, connectivity, …
  • This is no doubt the best news story for the planet that I’ve read lately. I just hope that we learn from it and don’t revert if and when live returns to normal.

Technology Troubleshooting

During the live This Week in Ontario Edublogs show on voicEd Radio, I was really uncomfortable this week.

It wasn’t the conversations or the topics, it was my right hear. It really hurt.

Throughout the show, I kept pulling the right ear bud out and putting it back in. No matter what I tried, it hurt.

At the end of the show, like I do every time, I roll up the headset and stick it on the desk. After an hour of sitting in one spot and talking, I’m ready for a break. I’d forgotten about the discomfort until Friday afternoon when a couple of friends from Iowa invited me to a virtual happy hour. I grabbed a can of Cowbell from the fridge and got connected. The pain came back.

This time, I took the time to pull it out and I saw why. The plastic gummy thing that goes over the speaker wasn’t there. So, I was hard plastic to whatever was in my ear and it really did hurt.

I hope that I didn’t vacuum it up. A visual search of the floor doesn’t reveal anything so I’m going to get down on all fours and see if it somehow fell behind my desk.

Wish me luck.

Video of the Week

Maybe not completely accurate but does demonstrate the power of distancing.

How about these for tailfeathers at the bird feeder? Does he/she think we don’t know?

Thanks for reading.

Please join me daily for something new and, hopefully, interesting for you. Time willing, this summary appears every Sunday afternoon.

Be safe.
