My Week Ending 2019-06-17

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Below are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week.

  • I always coded the answer to every program that I gave my students. It was my way to make sure that the instructions given and the techniques needed for solution were reasonable. I was always impressed when they came up with better answers than me.
  • If this comes to fruition, I may be done with Chrome for good as a browser. I already use Opera or Firefox for the most part. But not on my Chromebook. It’s still Chrome there although the others are installed on the Android side.
  • This is a Kiefer for Ontario politics and our Premier.
  • These are great pieces of advice for keeping track of your passwords and making them more difficult to guess.
  • I think I’ve probably bought my last Apple product. The price is just so high that you just don’t feel like you can update until you get the very last penny’s worth of use from them. Then, the latest and greatest is Sooooo expensive.
  • The ban on single use plastics is coming. What’s to stop you from doing a self-imposed ban right now?
  • I’ve always felt that the Google suite was missing a decent graphic and drawing program. Here are some suggestions.
  • We all hate geese for the mess that they leave behind. But, as this video will attest, they can be darn cute at times.
  • This is an interesting article to understand the latest trend in logo design. I know a certain community that needed to read it.
  • Who doesn’t love Sphero? Here’s a great wiki collection of activities to mess around with. Great for that summer workshop you’re planning.
  • It’s a sad time for optional secondary school courses in the province. Here’s what’s chopped in Hamilton Wentworth.
  • It’s coming up on summer and that means it’s Ant time. Here are some non-chemical ideas for getting rid of them.
  • I’ve never been asked to take a quiz about fake news. I wonder which of the statistics here about Canadians I would be.
  • Will this be the next fad in programming? Can we kiss our traditional tools and programs goodbye?

Technology Troubleshooting

Well, I learned a valuable lesson this last week about the block editor in WordPress. I was in the middle of writing a post and the power went out.

Fortunately, I was on my laptop and so the battery kept things alive. Normally, the power comes back momentarily and life goes on.

But not this time.

In the meantime, WordPress was doing its best to “Save Draft”. I’ve seen this before when the power went out. It never ends well. So, I decided to play it smart. I opened a document in LibreOffice and did a select all from the blog post and copied it. I went to LibreOffice and pasted. We’ve all done that a million times, right?

The only thing that pasted was the last block!

So, I went back and repeated the procedure and got just the last block again. Just to confirm my stupidity, I tried again with the same results.

What to do. Internet was live but WordPress wasn’t able to back it up.

Surely, the developers at WordPress must know about this. I went menu hunting and found this.

Bacon saved; lesson learned.

Video of the Week

I’ve never really understood this sport but since it’s on television…

Photo of the Week

It’s been so wet around here. We’ve had a run on snakes. This one matches the colours of our new mulch.

Please join me daily and I hope that you check in next Sunday for a summary of my week. Thanks for reading.
