Whatever happened to …

… the Pink Panther?

I knew that I had to follow up on the Popeye post with this one!

It was first year university. I lived in an apartment with three other guys. Two of us studied Mathematics and Computer Science, one in Engineering, and the other in Physics.

Every afternoon from either 4-4:30 or 4:30-5, we gathered in the living room to watch the Pink Panther show. Typically, it was 3 or 4 cartoons with the Panther, Inspector, or the Aardvark. If memory serves me correctly, it was broadcast on CHCH from Hamilton. So, that’s where we relaxed after a day of learning with two exceptions. Seldom it happened on Tuesdays because that was $0.99 steak night at Ponderosa. If it was your turn to cook supper, you’d be in the kitchen while the others watched the show.

I still remember the words to the theme song. (you should be laughing if you get it).

The Pink Panther also became a movie where we see arguably the funniest gag ever.

It’s funny how I remember such few details of The Pink Panther, and yet, am humming the song as I write this comment. I think that I need to check out some YouTube video clips now, Doug. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Never saw the cartoon (maybe Detroit stations didn’t carry it) but I loved the movies and “does your dog bite” is an absolute classic. I wasn’t old enough to go see the movies in theatres when they first came out, but I remember my parents going to see them and laughing hysterically as they retold some of the funniest bits when they got home. I watched them years later on TV and could instantly see why my parents loved them so much.
The Pink Panther was a diamond, Clouseau made Dreyfuss’ eye twitch and by the final movie had driven him insane. I also remember his housekeeper, Kato, leaping out at him unexpectedly to help keep Clouseau’s reflexes razor sharp.
Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme is a staple for every high school band but I wonder how many of those students have seen any of the movies?
