My Week Ending 2019-03-24

Here’s a summary of some of the things I learned and published this week.

You can follow my daily readings as they happen here.  Here are a selected few, with commentary, from the past week.

  • A summary of things proposed for changes to education in Ontario.
  • I’d never heard of the concept of Letterblocking but I’ll tell you … it’s fun.
  • The fact that Facebook had to take down so many copies of the New Zealand video is an indication of where certain factions of our society are today.  There’s nothing there that should be of real interest to anyone except the police investigating the crime.  When the trial arrives, it shouldn’t take long.  Play the video and convict.  In case you were wondering, not since 1957.
  • I don’t think that this could possibly have an answer.  If we can’t define what ethics are universally, how can we expect AI to have a chance?
  • I found this interesting.  The reason why it had never been done before was because it “wasn’t possible”.  Now Google makes it possible?  Security is always of interest to me.
  • This is something that all teachers should read.  There still is the ranking of teachers based upon the perceived importance of what they teach.  That’s wrong.  They all teach children.
  • Listen to the Minister of Education explain how the changes in Ontario are going to be good.
  • I think that it’s scary to see how many people don’t know that you can change the default search engine in your browser.  Here are some alternatives to whatever the default might be.
  • Another example of where money wins out over doing good things.
  • Tim Horton’s answer to McDonald’s loyalty program.  The ball’s in your court now, McDonald’s.  Right now, I go for the coffee but stay for the orange cranberry muffins.  Just saying.
  • In case you missed it, the statement from Ontario Teachers’ Federation president Diane Dewing about Ontario classrooms.
  • If this doesn’t make you want to swear off plastic, I don’t know what will.
  • I’m really not interested.  I can only imagine how big the price tag will be.
  • If only to download and install for use in public places, maybe this new addition to Opera might find a way to your phone.

Blog Posts on doug … off the record

Technology Troubleshooting

Last week, I talked about the problem with the latest update of Chrome and a couple of the problems that I was happening.

This week, I used the Brave browser all week on my MacBook Pro.  It’s based on the Chromium browser and has added security features.

And guess what?  The challenges followed me.

I was able to work around the URL issue by removing the theme in the browser but the three colours still appear at the top of the browser even though everything else on my computer is graphite and conforms to what I think the rules are.

So, I guess the situation comes from Chromium instead of Chrome.

Video of the Week

If only I’d had watched this video before the movie, I could have been a fountain of knowledge beyond just knowing the words to all the songs!

My Favourite Photo of the Week

First ship of the season off the dock at Colchester.  Actually well off the dock and in the middle of Lake Erie.  Bonus points if you can spot Jaimie.

Thanks for reading.
