Avoiding the creepout

I hope that you took a moment to play around with the website shared yesterday.  There’s a powerful message in there that should confirm some things in your mind.

So, what do you do?

One of the bits of common wisdom is to use a feature that you’ll find in any modern browser although under various names – incognito, in private, private modes.  They have powerful and safe looking names but what do they really do?

From the Chrome Browser

There are some advantages but read the warnings carefully.

Do you want to prove it to yourself?  Going incognito doesn’t make you invisible.

Head over to “Are you anonymous?” http://www.nothingprivate.ml/

You’ll be asked a simple question – enter your name.  I wonder if anyone actually enters their real name…

That’s all you need to do.

Then, in your browser, open your private viewing window and go to the website.

Surprised?

It’s certainly worth observing and scratching your head.

The real beauty in this is that the source code is on Github so you and/or your students can do a little research and code reading.

Then, it’s worth a discussion as to what private mode really means.
