Carol Vorderman says pupils should study maths to 18
This is an interesting read. Drop into any daycare centre and you’ll see kids just loving mathematics. They’re sorting, building, counting, singing, organizing, hypothesizing and having a great time at it. Even in the primary grades, you still see the enthusiasm for these activities. Then, all of a sudden, we start to test them on mathematics concepts and the wheels start to wobble. If we could just sustain that thrill of exploration, we wouldn’t need to worry about it, I suspect. Even a simple thing like making change goes from a challenge to a dreaded task. Give a clerk $20.22 for a $19.22 bill and see what happens. I think this is a simple proposed solution to a bigger problem. But, if we’re going to force students to study mathematics longer, why don’t we force them to at least take one course in Computer Science?
