Google Translate Doesn’t Help

I do check the comments to my blog.  I really do.  Even the things that Akismet tags as spam.  I’m cleaning things out tonight and notice this reply.

Hmmmm.  Obviously not English or French. It does look at bit German-ish to my non German speaking eyes.  From my years living in Kitchener-Waterloo and the Oktoberfest, I do recognize "Willkommen".  The rest is a little obscure!  What to do?  I’ll get my old friend Google Translate to help out.  I’ll even let it recognize the language in case I’m wrong…

It is indeed German.  Now, I knew a lot of really smart people who spoke German as their second language.  Maybe there’s something really relevant in this reply.  Here’s the translation.

I don’t know why I doubted Akismet in the first place.  This looks like someone spilled a German dictionary on the floor and tried to put it back together.  Some makes sense but others don’t.

Either that or Google Translate dropped the ball.  Somehow I don’t think so.Tags: , ,

The content of this blog is generated by whatever strikes my fancy at any given point. It might be computers, weather, political, or something else in nature. I experiment and comment a lot on things so don't take anything here too seriously; I might change my mind a day later but what you read is my thought and opinion at the time I wrote it! 1. Must have been spam. I received a reply recently and thought it was some spam from an unidentified country – I couldn’t determine the language with my limited knowledge! I put it through Google Translate and it was a very insightful response to what I had written from someone in Norway. Where would we have been years ago without a resource like this? Paying translators for their services no doubt. I wonder if that might be another profession sitting somewhere on the extinction timeline?

  2. It could well be in the future, Jenny. For right now, there’s still enough intelligence to be built to make them really functional. I used to be the webmaster for the OSAPAC website which is bilingual French and English. Some of the little things I could do with my high school French but for the bigger things, thankfully I had French colleagues. I used to threaten them with using an online translator which gained me lessons in the nuances of language translation.

I think it’s cool that you had a quality comment from a foreign language. The best I can get is foreign spam!

    Thanks for your comments.

  3. Hi Doug (again!)

I felt the need to find the comment that was left on my blog and the translation obtained from Google translate.

Wondering what this says? Here’s the translation from Google translate.

What’s the point of asking students to chat? Can not they just work together without computers? Sure, they can. But when they chat, they also document the participation and understanding, as the name of the student comes up when they “say” anything. Some students who were not necessarily actively contribute orally in class, find it easier to write the answers. Moreover, the teacher at the end of the session up the whole chat into a Word document and then delete the chat room – but still have evidence of what students have done in an hour. And it would not surprise me if some of my students usually use the chat while I stand and teach whatever – so I might as well use this type of chat rooms into something useful! Should the teacher be sick one day (but not so sick that she can not sit in front of a computer), it is the general also possible to ask students to log on chatzy and ask any questions about what they will be working directly with the teacher there, JennyLu which tells about in this blog post. […]

I was surprised when I realised it was a genuine comment.

    Jenny : )

  4. That’s a pretty good translation, Jenny. I wonder if it’s the fault of the translator or whether a word to word translation misses some things like verb forms. I still think that it’s very cool that you had a Norwegian writing reply on your blog. Did you track the IP address to see if the response indeed came from Norway? In this global world, it could also be someone two houses down!

On a totally different angle, I do like the pedagogy described in the reply. With my university class, we would do the same sort of thing only using instead of a chat room. It makes the export of the content at the end of the lesson very easy to do.
