Follow Friday – QR Style

Happy Follow Friday…I’d like to acknowledge the Active Ontario Educators with a little promotion to the great content that you’re providing other educators.  I’m going to use the link in your Twitter profile below and will create a QR code that will take folks to your blog/website/whatever.

I’m still wrestling with the place for QR Codes.  Surely, they are a quick and easy way to distribute information to those with portable devices, cameras, and appropriate software.  But, what about those who are just plain surfing their way to your website using a browser and traditional computer?  In its simplest form, it seems to me that a QR Code is relatively limited in scope.  But, if you think about the maturity that’s come to webpages, it does offer a solution.

Suggestions for making a website accessible can be read at this W3C resource.  Excellent tips like the appropriate use of the ALT tag make sites appropriate for screen readers.  Why couldn’t this also be applied to a code that’s inserted.  And, for those visiting your resource via traditional browser, make the QR Code itself a button that, when clicked, takes you to the same resource that is included in the information embedded?  I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

In the meantime, enjoy the #FollowFriday folks below.  They’re active and appear in my list of Ontario Educators.

If you’re an Ontario educator and would like to be added to the list, I’ve created a quick form here.  It’s already got 174 followers.  Scan or click the code below to access.

  3. I agree…I am always amazed at your ability for new learning, Doug!

I’m fascinated by QR codes, and if you had been able to join us at ECOO you would have noticed that @sig225 created them for the signs outside of the meeting room doors. I didn’t have time to check them out as I always seemed to be scurrying around somewhere, but I intend to follow up on his work and your post here to think about implications for classrooms.

And…when I see this incredible list of people with whom I am associated with on your list here…it’s humbling to say the least. Ontario has a pretty amazing bunch of educators!!
