Creativity in Need of a Creative Solution

My friend Chris posted this to her Facebook profile last night.  I saw it first thing this morning (at home, of course because YouTube is blocked at work) and am so thankful that I wasn’t drinking coffee at the time.  This would be one of those “coffee up the nose” moments.

I think that Apple should be proud that someone took the time to try and replicate their very successful set of commercials.  This is so well done that you might not recognize it as a knock off – at first, anyway.

But, such is the creativity that folks are able to exhibit in a world where we have access to contemporary publishing tools.  Authors can share their work without the hassles of going through the time, cost, and effort of traditional media routes.  Citizen Journalism just requires the tools which are relatively cheap and web resources like YouTube offer the means to publish and share.

The example above is but one of thousands that terrific and creative people design and produce in their homes and publish to the internet for all of us to enjoy.  Now, if you have a friend like I do in Chris, you might hear about this video.  Such is the nature of viral.  Yet, for all the videos that have gone viral, there are literally thousands that haven’t.  Fortunately, you do get an opportunity to stumble into these other equally as good videos by looking at the “Related Videos” to something that you’re already viewing on a website like YouTube.  Your next favourite director or writer might just be there.

In fact, in a media rich world, wouldn’t this be a perfect place for students to display their efforts?  David Pogue was recently interviewed about his video advice here.

Today’s reality is that they can – but typically on their dime – in the evenings.  The reality is that this publishing venue is blocked by many school districts in the name of internet safety, securing bandwidth, and a myriad of other reasons.  Some of the reasons are good ones, but how many are made on the basis of an irrational paranoia?

In the IT industry, a common term is the “last mile” which refers to the process of getting everyone connected because the local point of presence is just in the distance but may be unreachable at present.

It seems to me that we’re introducing a “last mile” to the curriculum when we put all this technology and pedagogy into the classroom with the message of supporting 21st Century skills and getting ready for the workplace and all that.  It’s a conversation that all sides to the issue have to have.  There has to be a compromise that will make it work for everyone. Let’s get these creative minds to focus on generating a creative solution.

    I agree with you regarding blocking potential curriculum ideas – recently I shared the now-viral Texting While Driving video ( http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/technology/01distracted.html?_r=1&hp – hopefully the NY Times isn’t blocked there) with fellow faculty members – one wanted to show it to students but it took a while for me to find a site which wasn’t blocked. In the case of my school, it’s not CIPA that necessitated blocking streaming video on YouTube, it was the worry that streaming video would kill available bandwidth needed by Discovery Streaming movies or another approved curriculum source.

    Recently we installed a filter which allows teachers to request a passcode to bypass a “non-CIPA” flagged website. Of course you have to first get that passcode. For what it’s worth, we use 8e6 to filter which allows filtering by IP address, even by classroom if we wish.
