In a world where we place so much value on competitiveness, we have awards for everything.
Now, there are the Twitties.
In a number of categories including “Best Tweet”, “Funniest Tweet”, “Smartest Tweet”, … various tweets from Twitter have been nominated as the best of the best for the year. Not quite sure how, or why, or if there will be a red carpet event, but you get to vote on your favourite tweet.
It’s fun, brings a smile to your face, isn’t something you’d share with the young ‘uns, but something to while away 5 minutes on a Saturday afternoon.
Beyond its current entertainment value though, the educator in me is wondering if there isn’t a message for education here. Twiiter is limited to 140 characters; cell phones are similarly limited. Do we teach how to be an effective writer for a purpose in 140 characters or less? After all, who isn’t without such a device these days?
Like the limitation or not, it’s a reality.
